We had a fabulous day! Check out the Photo Gallery to see a collection of photos from today. It started out with a great turn out for Books and Bagels. We then had a ton of fun at our Field Day. Having Field Day at the beginning of the year is a fabulous team building experience. Afterwards we went to Ms. Clausen's class for PYP Buddies. During that time, students listened to "It's Ok To Be Different" and discussed what it meant to be Open-Minded. Each 3rd Grader paired up with a 1st Grader and they completed a Venn Diagram while they discussed their similarities and their differences. Soon a display will be up in the hallway showing these diagrams and photos of the Buddies. We are looking forward to our next meeting with our new 1st Grade Buddies.

Today was also our first day of Library Check-Out. Now that students are in third grade, they can check out 3 books, one of which has to be in their AR Zone. In the afternoon, after math, students illustrated their autumn poem with watercolors. Our day ended with a birthday treat celebrating Mauricio's birthday.

As we head into the final week of our How We Express Ourselves unit, students will be publishing their poems and memorizing a poem to share our class's Poetry Cafe.  Please join us at on Friday, October 5th at 2:30 p.m. in our classroom. Our classroom will be transformed into a Poetry Cafe and students will recite their favorite poem and share their published poems. We hope you can make it!

Poetry not only has been a focus in Writing, but also Reading. Students have been focusing on the skills of visualizing and inferring during Guided Reading groups using poems at their level. Students have been marking these poems by highlighting vivid verbs and figurative language in order to picture what the author is communicating and to infer the mood/tone of the poem. Furthermore, students have been writing questions to think deeper about the poem.

We also will begin our next math unit on addition and subtraction on Tuesday. Information regarding this unit will go home next week. Look for this in next week's Friday Folder. Your child also has his/her user name and password to the math program at ALEKS.Com. Accessing these lessons from home is not a requirement, but is recommended as it is highly individualized. Let me know if you have any issues connecting to it.
