How is an egg like the earth?

October 17, 2012
As part of our new unit, Earth, Wind and Fire, students are investigating the structure of the earth. Over the past two days, we have used a boiled egg as a model of the earth. Ask your child to tell you how the shell, egg white, and yolk are like the earth. You will be receiving more information at the end of the week in our monthly newsletter about this unit.

In the meantime, we are lucky to have the Education Outreach department from the Museum of Nature and Science with us on Friday to conduct a lab entitled UnEarth Colorado. This will begin at 1:10 in the community room.  As a reminder, we will be visiting the Museum of Nature and Science to see the current Pompeii Exhibit on Monday, October 29th.

Mini-Inquiries

October 9, 2012
Throughout the year, you might hear your child talk about doing a "mini-inquiry." In layman's terms, this means students are going to do research to find the answer to a question. We adults do it all the time and most of the time we turn to the internet to find the answer. Well, mini-inquiries are the perfect opportunity to teach research skills before embarking on a huge research project (which we will do a few times this year).

Last week students identified a question related to poetry that...

Hot Spot Coffee Shop Poetry Cafe is the BIG SUCCESS!

October 6, 2012
Thank you to everyone who helped make our first end-of-unit celebration, The Poetry Cafe, a huge success. For almost every unit, we have an end-of-unit celebration. We'll be sure to let you know when the next one is. Thank you again!

Obama Rally + Mr. Q is awarded $25,000!

October 5, 2012

What a fantastic opportunity we had today! Although we weren't very close to President Obama, the entire experience from start to finish was unforgettable. We left shortly after 9 and at 10:30 the President addressed us. Upon return we spent time preparing for our Poetry Cafe.

At the end of the day, we went to the auditorium for an assembly. We heard it had to do with the Governor. There was excitement around the idea of seeing the Governor and the President on the same day. At the assembly i...

Poetry and TCAP Tests

October 3, 2012
This week during Guided Reading, students are reading and analyzing poetry that are TCAP released items. (These are poems that were formerly on previous TCAP tests).  The purpose of this is two-fold. First, it is to begin exposing students to what they can expect on TCAP and to develop confidence surrounding this upcoming test. The second is to develop test taking skills and to view tests as a type of genre, where students navigate the passages and related questions, but still use their think...

Monday and Friday Next Week=Must Be At School Days

September 27, 2012
Monday, October 1 is October Count Day. It is imperative that every student be at school that day. Our school gets per pupil funding and that is the day that decides how many students are at Brown and how much money our school gets. We also have our first 3C assembly that day.

On Friday is our Poetry Cafe at 2:30 p.m. Students are VERY excited about this event. They have many ideas of how to transform our room into cafe, including decorations and food. Thank you in advance if you have gracious...

PHEW! What a day!

September 22, 2012
We had a fabulous day! Check out the Photo Gallery to see a collection of photos from today. It started out with a great turn out for Books and Bagels. We then had a ton of fun at our Field Day. Having Field Day at the beginning of the year is a fabulous team building experience. Afterwards we went to Ms. Clausen's class for PYP Buddies. During that time, students listened to "It's Ok To Be Different" and discussed what it meant to be Open-Minded. Each 3rd Grader paired up with a 1st Grader a...

ALEKS- A Differentiated Math Computer Program

September 18, 2012
Today your 3rd grader logged onto ALEKS.COM for the first time. This is a differentiated math computer program. Your child first takes an assessment. Some students are still working on this initial assessment. He/she then receives a pie graph.  Each piece of the pie represents a different math concept. It shows what he/she knows and concepts to be learned.

We will work on ALEKS 1-2 times a week at school. However, this is a fantastic way for your child to continue to build on his/her math con...
